At HubSpot for the past four years I have mostly worked with VC backed companies. The reason I started to focus on VC backed companies was because I saw that they all had a few things in common and that I liked selling them HubSpot because they were good fits for inbound marketing.

Startups start by selling to people they know. They build their pipeline in the beginning stages by working people in their network.  When you start a company you are likely using your network as your only strategy up front. You started your company because you saw a need or a challenge in the world that you thought you could solve for. So you started a company. Good. That is awesome! But, you need to stop thinking in the "now" and start thinking in the "future" too. The now will soon turn into a year later, two years later, and hopefully 10 years later. The decisions you make about marketing early on are more important than you might think. Planning and strategizing on the early stages of your marketing plan are important.

One of my least favorite things is when a startup tells me that they need to wait on doing marketing until they are selling something. When our founders started HubSpot they didn't even have a product really. This was like 7 years ago...They were at MIT together in grad school and came up with this concept that no one had ever heard of before. They decided to start a blog about inbound marketing because they saw that the marketing space was moving in a direction and they wanted to take advantage of it.

At HubSpot I have carved out a little business inside of our business. Overtime in sales here I have learned what makes a good fit for HubSpot (our product) as well as our methodology of inbound marketing and sales. I have found that I enjoy working with startups - early and later stage. The thing startups all have in common is that they are usually trying to figure out their short term and longer term marketing strategies. Most of the companies I work with are startup in the software and tech space. They are usually VC backed and they are usually going through funding to help them to grow. Usually HubSpot and inbound marketing methods are timely for a company like this because they are actively trying to figure out how they are going to go about growing their company.
