Jill Shingledecker, Corporate Communications Manager at Siemens on How Women Are Bringing Fresh Perspective to a Once Male Dominated Industry.

Jill Shingledecker is a Corporate Communications Manager at Siemens. Siemens is a huge company and it is great to see her submit her role so we can shine a light on what it is like to be a corporate communications manager at a large technology company. Here is Jill's story as what it is like to work as a woman in tech at Siemens.

What do you think women should know about your role?

Women should know that working in technology can be very challenging but very rewarding. There are great opportunities for women to contribute to companies that focus on technology and need more diversity to take them to the next level. For me, it's really interesting to work with different types of people and personalities, and showcase my communications skills to transition their way of thinking. It's a win-win because I get to see the world through their career eyes and, hopefully, they through mine.

What do you enjoy about working in tech?

I enjoy the diversity and watching others transform to my way of thinking, as well as learning more about how they process things differently from me, which is something I have been surprised to learn that I can enforce in my everyday work and thought process on how I approach my responsibilities. I am more well-rounded by being part of the tech world and the skills I've gained can be used within tech or easily transferred to other types of businesses.

Why do you think we need more women in tech?

It's not like this anymore once you're in a tech industry but there is a perception that tech is very much male-dominated with "over your head" intelligent computer/engineer-type personalities leading the charge. While these personalities are obviously in full-effect I think women have brought a fresh perspective to this once male-dominated industry. Our natural ability to relate to people with compassion and emotion really adds a nice balance to hard-core tech companies.
